La Comedie Italienne takes its inspiration as the name suggests from an Italian form of theater known as Commedia dell'arte which began in the 16th century and featured plays based on improvisation rather than full scripts. Plays were performed on temporary outdoor stages with actors wearing masks. Three main characters, the servant, the master, and the lovers were always part of the play, which dealt with love, jealousy, adultery and old age. Well known characters such as Scaramouche and Harlequin were introduced but more importantly these plays paved the way for female actors. In contrast to Edwardian theater, where men portrayed women, in these plays women played themselves.
